TRANSLATION OF PRODUCT LABELS
As part of the collaboration, we localize the text of dietary supplement product labels into four languages using a machine translation workflow with human post-editing, taking into account the relevant EU regulations.
LAYOUT CHECK OF THE LABEL DESIGN
Revision of the localized label design created by the graphic designers in PDF format, ensuring proper formatting, layout, text accuracy, and legal compliance.
Challenges

A major challenge in projects is ensuring legal compliance while flexibly handling requests in various formats, whether they come as Word source files or PDF-embedded comments. Another important aspect is maintaining consistency between languages and clarifying arising questions and corrections separately for each project language. In some cases, intentional inconsistency must also be preserved, for example, when certain products are marketed with different dosages in different countries.
Solutions
For each project, we consistently collaborate with the same linguists who specialize in the food industry. Based on the EU’s 14 key product labeling regulations, we have compiled a terminology database and a translation memory to provide automated support and verification during projects, ensuring accurate and consistent translations. By applying QA tools, we ensure the correct use of terminology, preservation of non-translatable product names, and filtering out formatting errors. A special segmentation rule created in our CAT tool guarantees that ingredients appear in the translation in the same order as in the source, as they must be listed in descending order of quantity. It also ensures that no ingredient is omitted from the list.
Our CAT software's QA tools also allow for easy automation of checks such as correct terminology usage, avoidance of prohibited terms, filtering out missing terms, formatting checks, and proper marking of allergens (bold, underlined, or supplementing the translation with the allergen if it does not contain it) without in-depth knowledge of the target language. Additionally, this tool ensures that non-translatable product names remain unchanged in the target languages while also checking for inconsistencies, character limits, spelling, and punctuation.
Following the translation, the completed label undergoes a layout check. During this step, we ensure that the character set is suitable, text placement is correct, accents have not shifted, uppercase and lowercase letters are used properly, and no changes were unintentionally introduced during formatting. We also transfer any newly introduced modifications in the source text to the target languages.
RESULTS
As a result of the established workflows and tools, the collaboration is efficient and successful, ensuring legal compliance and high linguistic quality for every project. The continuously expanding translation memory and terminology database provide long-term benefits throughout the collaboration, reducing errors and increasing efficiency. Project-specific QA processes and other resources enable precise and automatic checks, facilitating the work of linguists and the graphic designer.
